Comments:
I have posted an overview of Psalm 19 in an outline format. I do not quote Psalm 19 so follow the link above to read it.

The Psalmist speaks of God's creation, God's Word, and Me...

Creation speaks and has a story to tell-

Declares his glory v.1
  • Thank you Lord that your beauty and might and infinutude is evident in your creation.  Thank you that the most beautiful thing you have made pales compared to you.  Thank you for allowing me to participate in your glory!
It knows of his handiwork v.1
  • How beautiful to think of how your creation knows your voice.  You spoke everything into being Lord and your ways are known amongst your angels that witnessed so much of your creation.  Man did not witness any of your creative work but so I am thankful for the revelation given by your creation itself!
It speaks continuously v.2
  • Thank you that there is no stopping your glory or the celebration of your goodness!
It gives knowledge v.2
  • Thank you for the knowledge of your attributes and for the revelation you provide to us in your creation.  Your might and your care and your infinite power are evident!
  • How important it is for us to join in this shouting of your message...
Romans 10:14–18 (ESV)14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
It is not heard! v. 3
  • Forgive us Lord for hearing so poorly.  Forgive me for not being a doer and so often not receiving the message you have for me.
Luke 8:10 (ESV)10 he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’
Luke 8:12 (ESV)12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
Deuteronomy 29:4 (ESV)But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.

  • You explain Lord that many do not hear because they are in rebellion and do not obey...
Jeremiah 6:10 (ESV) 10  To whom shall I speak and give warning,
that they may hear?
  Behold, their ears are uncircumcised,
they cannot listen;
  behold, the word of the Lord is to them an object of scorn;
they take no pleasure in it.
Its message goes everywhere v.4
  • Thank you that you send evidence of your glory throughout the universe.
  • The mighty sun is housed in your creation
    • Sun is a bridegroom
      • Thank you that your Son is our strong groom that is coming for us and has sacrificed himself for us
    • Sun is strong and runs its course with joy
      • Thank you Lord that you accomplish your purposes
    • It goes everywhere and nothing escapes its impact/heat v. 6
      • Thank you that nothing is outside of the influence of your sovereignty
    • Nothing challenges it or stops it v.5
      • Thank you that nothing can stand against you
God speaks and advises us plainly in His Word- that which created all that is.

His law/instruction is perfect, complete, blameless, lacking nothing
  • Revives the soul and blesses me...
2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
His revelation/promises are certain, faithful, trustworthy, sure v.7
  • Not reliant on our understanding or subject to our reasoning.
Isaiah 55:9 (ESV)  For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
His law/instruction is right, smooth, straight v.8
  • Bring true joy, not temporal fleeting satisfaction
His instruction is clean, pure, unstained v.8
  • My eyes are opened as I obey and walk straight v.8
    • Thank you for revealing yourself to me and drawing near as I draw near to you!
John 14:21 (ESV)21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
Daniel 3:23–25 (ESV)23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell bound into the burning fiery furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” 25 He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”
James 4:8 (ESV)
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
  • As I surrender you reveal, you open my eyes and remove deception
Ezekiel 12:2 (ESV)“Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a rebellious house.
The fear that he induces wipes away self justification...cleanses me v.9
  • Due to his holiness, might, infinitude
Psalm 111:10 (ESV) 10  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever!

Proverbs 8:13 (ESV) 13  The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.
  Pride and arrogance and the way of evil
and perverted speech I hate.
  • Stands forever- never shall we not have a fear of your holiness and might
  • Your dealing with Job when he tried to place you subject to his reasoning Lord is frightening and beautiful.
    • Job questions you...
Job 31:2–4 (ESV)  What would be my portion from God above
and my heritage from the Almighty on high?
  Is not calamity for the unrighteous,
and disaster for the workers of iniquity?
  Does not he see my ways
and number all my steps?
    • You Answer with a question of your own...
Job 38:1–7 (ESV)38 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
  “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
  Dress for action like a man;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.
  “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
  Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
  On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
  when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Job 38:12 (ESV) 12  “Have you commanded the morning since your days began,
and caused the dawn to know its place,
Job 38:34–38 (ESV) 34  “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
that a flood of waters may cover you?
    • Job's response to you explains the teaching of the Fear of the Lord...
Job 42:2–6 (ESV)  “I know that you can do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
  ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
  Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
  ‘Hear, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.’
  I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you;
  therefore I despise myself,
and repent in dust and ashes.”
His decrees, rules, judgement is true v. 9
  • Truth defined by what comes from his mouth
    • Thank you Lord that what you say is.  It is as simple as that!  The creative power of your Word requires that what you say simply is (without doubt, hesitation, resistance...you define).  Reality is powerless to resist the Word of your mouth and thus your promises are reality unchallenged!  Brian Darrow's explanation of the wall being red in the moment that you say it is red expresses your inability to lie as you are truth and all of reality is subject to you!!!!
Isaiah 46:10–11 (ESV) 10  declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
  saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,
and I will accomplish all my purpose,’
 11  calling a bird of prey from the east,
the man of my counsel from a far country.
  I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass;
I have purposed, and I will do it.
Psalm 119:160 (ESV) 160  The sum of your word is truth,
and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.
  • Entire system of his revealed Word is perfect, beyond judgement from anyone, righteous in its own standing with no need of anything.
Hebrews 1:3 (ESV)He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Decrees, rules to be valued over any material thing v.10
  • In them are pleasures forever
Psalm 16:11 (ESV) 11  You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
  • I am drawn in an enamoured by your goodness
Your Word warns me v.11
  • Great penalty waits in disobedience
    • Damage every relationship I have, beginning with you
  • Great reward in obedience
    • Salvation
    • Revelation of yourself in a loving relationship with me as you revealed your pre-incarnate Son to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego!
    • Power to fulfill the roles and commissions you give me like you did for Joshua!
You direct me on how then to react to this revelation of the work of your Word
  • I shall acknowledge my dependence on your assessment of my heart in place of my deception. v.12
Psalm 139:23–24 (ESV) 23  Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
 24  And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
  • I shall listen for you to teach me where I stray when I am unaware due to my deceit v. 12
Job 34:32 (ESV) 32  teach me what I do not see;
if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’?
  • I shall listen to you when I am found holding onto sins that would have a stronghold and hold me in captivity v.13
    • I shall lean on you to free me from my sin, not myself v.13
  • I shall be blameless due to your work on the cross, not my efforts v.13
  • You shall be my rock, my source of rescue and I shall seek only to please you v14.
Application and Prayer:

  • Today I will listen to what your creation tells me
  • Today I will hear you by studying your Word
  • Today I will determine to be a doer of your Word and draw near to you
  • Today I will ask that you would reveal my sin to me and accomplish the work of making me more like your Son each day
Thank you for your Word.  Thank you for your sovereignty.  Please teach me to listen and to take action. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Soli Deo Gloria!
